As a direct reaction to her “hands-off” process in the Pour Mask series, Kylie Heidenheimer goes back to a direct relationship between her hand and the surface of the canvas. Brush marks and brush stains start to replace the incidental formations of paint. These deliberate and strategic marks further accentuate the visual rifts in the space created by these opposing devices. Heidenheimer continues her on-going explorations of spatial constructs and examinations of visual infinitudes and creates complex surface tensions through her mark-making. She seeks a visual weighted-ness versus a lightness while attempting to create tensions between what was impossible to strategize and what wasn't.
Kylie Heidenheimer’s paintings have been described by fellow artist and writer Stephen Maine as “repositories of matter and metaphors for space”. Born in Gainesville, Florida, Heidenheimer grew up in St. Louis and now lives and works in New York City. She has had six solo shows since 2007 including two at Galerie Gris in Hudson, New York. The Albany Times Union reviewed the first show in 2013. Her solo shows in New York include a selection of works at J.C. Flowers & Co (2012), Rift at Thomas Jaeckel Gallery (2009) and Bursts, Atmosphere and Stasis at Columbia University’s Italian Academy (2007). An expanded version of the latter exhibition took place at Ohio Northern University (2008, catalog with essay by Stephen Maine). Heidenheimer has participated in Cutlog Art Fair in New York in 2014 and 2013 as well as Aqua Art Fair in 2011 and 2010 in Miami. Venues in New York City and Brooklyn in which she has participated in group exhibitions include 56 Henry, Abrazo Gallery, Thomas Jaeckel Gallery, Feature, Inc, Storefront Bushwick, Station Independent Projects, Kianga Ellis Projects, Sideshow Gallery and Janet Kurnatowski Gallery. Group shows in which she has shown work outside New York include at Galerie Gris, Hudson LABspace, Great Barrington, MA & Hillsdale, NY and Raritan Valley Community College in Long Branch, NJ (New York Times review). In Fall 2019, Heidenheimer participated in a 10-artist group show that travels to University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Murray State, Kentucky and Marshall Arts Space in Memphis (catalog with essay by Stephanie Buhmann.) Heidenheimer has attended artist residencies at Yaddo, Blue Mountain Center, VCCA and the Millay Colony. She has an MFA from Hunter College and a BFA from Washington University.
