Richmond was born at Isleworth, Middlesex, in 1922 and studied at Kingston upon Thames School of Art between 1940-43. From 1946 he attended the Borough Polytechnic School of Art and fell under the influence of David Bomberg's teaching. Like many of his peers, including Auerbach, Kossoff, Creffield and Holden, his work owes a considerable debt to his master. During the late 1940s he took part in many Borough Group exhibitions, often exhibiting under the name Peter Richmond. Like Holt, he also exhibited at the Archer and Arcade Galleries during this period. In the early 1950s he lived in France, then Spain, before rejoining Bomberg in 1954 as an assistant at his ill-feted school in Ronda, Andalusia. Richmond was to remain in Spain for twenty years and in 1970 Richmond became director of the International School in Spain. In 1992 he contributed to the South Bank University exhibition - Homage to David Bomberg - and the same venue awarded him and his wife a joint exhibition in 1993. A major touring retrospective was held in 1994 at the Middlesbrough Art Gallery and on. Richmond made a large Millennium celebration painting titled London from the South Bank for the South Bank University.
