the Fifth Arrondissement in Paris (see below). After selecting the neighboring Jardin du
Luxembourg as the backdrop for the ambitious multi-paneled project, the artist spent the
next three years executing numerous studies. According to Marie-Anne Destrebecq-Martin,
Martin favored a preparatory process that began with individual studies of each figure,
followed by studies of groups of figures, and culminated in the group within the final setting.
The present work represents one of the young girls in panel four.
The study was later inscribed on the reverse: “Pour Simone Karoff, pour Noel, Decembre
1967, Martin-Ferriéres.” Mrs. Karoff was the director of the Wally Findlay Galleries, New
York and good friend of the artist and his son.
Petite fille en manteau et chapeau has been authenticated by Marie-Anne Destrebecq-Martin
and will be included in forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by the artist’s estate.
